In a quiet home on Akawi Way in Peyton, Colorado, a night of watching movies among friends tragically ended in bloodshed on December 6, 2023. Debray A. Scott, a 30-year-old male, was found dead inside the residence, a victim of a violent series of events that would leave four people dead in what investigators have described as an apparent murder-suicide. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting near midnight and discovered a man outside with non-life-threatening injuries. This man was the lone survivor.
Inside the home, the scene was grim. A SWAT team found the bodies of Scott, along with Desiree N. Vandelac, 54, and Robert V. Vandelac, 57. All three of their deaths are being investigated as homicides. The fourth deceased individual was identified as 22-year-old Peyton S. Vandelac, the son of Desiree and Robert. His death is not being investigated as a homicide, and he is considered the primary suspect in the deaths of his parents and Scott.
According to the survivor, Tyler Vandelac, the evening began with him, his brother Peyton, and Debray Scott watching movies in the basement. An argument erupted between the brothers, which escalated into a physical altercation, leaving Tyler with a dislocated shoulder. As their parents intervened and criticized Peyton for his behavior, the situation took a dark turn. While Tyler was preparing to go to the hospital for his injury, he heard loud bangs from upstairs.
Upon investigating, Tyler discovered his parents on the floor and saw his brother wiping what appeared to be a knife. Debray Scott was in the basement at the time of these events. Tyler managed to escape the house and call for help. When law enforcement later entered the home, they found Debray Scott deceased in the basement. The investigation concluded that there was no ongoing threat to the community as all involved parties were accounted for. No arrests have been made as the suspect is deceased.
