On New Year's Day of 2024, Richard Armando Ybarra, a 43-year-old male, was fatally shot in Pueblo, Colorado. The incident took place in the afternoon, just after 1 p.m., outside of a business described as a 'fish gaming establishment' located in the 1200 block of Berwind Avenue on the city's east side. When Pueblo Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Ybarra on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his upper chest.
He was unresponsive, and despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify a suspect within a short period. Through surveillance footage from the nearby business, authorities witnessed the events that led to Ybarra's death. The footage reportedly showed a man, later identified as 56-year-old Ricky Gilbert Trujillo, pointing a gun at Ybarra from a close distance and firing at least one shot. Court records indicate that Ybarra and Trujillo were friends and were with a group of other acquaintances outside the establishment before the shooting occurred.
Following the identification of the suspect, the Pueblo Police Department developed probable cause and arrested Ricky Gilbert Trujillo, charging him with first-degree murder. The motive for the shooting, as suggested by statements from Trujillo's wife and a friend, may have been related to his drug use. His wife told investigators that her husband had been using fentanyl with friends and that he had shot Ybarra 'over nothing.' A friend of Trujillo’s also informed police that he often becomes paranoid and believes people are after him when he is under the influence of drugs. The investigation is ongoing, but an arrest has been made in connection with the death of Richard Armando Ybarra.
