This disturbance was the beginning of a tragic event that would end in the death of 32-year-old Aisha Yvonne Quest. The situation quickly escalated when police arrived, as a man inside the apartment began shooting at surrounding units and into the parking lot, creating an
active shooter scenario that would last for hours.
Inside the apartment, Gregory Ryan Miles, 34, held Aisha Quest hostage. As a tense standoff unfolded, police evacuated some residents and established a perimeter. Negotiators made contact with Miles, who at one point told them, 'You got to help her,' in reference to the injured Quest. His own mother, who arrived at the scene, informed officers that Miles wanted the police to shoot him and that Quest had already been shot. The standoff reached its climax shortly before 10 a.m. when SWAT officers breached the apartment. An exchange of gunfire followed, resulting in Miles being shot and taken into custody.
Tragically, when officers secured the apartment, they found Aisha Quest with a gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
