Terry Wayne Holstein, a 32-year-old White / Caucasian male from Alkol, West Virginia, died on December 20, 2023, after a shooting in Lincoln County. What began as a Wednesday morning emergency call in the Sumerco area quickly turned into a fatal investigation, drawing West Virginia State Police to the 1700 block of Midway Road near Route 214. The shooting was reported around 9:00 a.m., and early reports said Holstein had been struck multiple times.
Emergency crews worked to get Holstein to help as quickly as possible. He was taken from the scene toward the intersection of Route 214 and U.S. Route 119, where a medical helicopter was brought in to fly him to a hospital. The response was serious enough that part of Corridor G was temporarily shut down so the aircraft could land. Despite those efforts, Holstein later died from his injuries.
Investigators said Holstein had been shot four times.
State Police described the matter as connected to a civil dispute, and reports indicated the shooter and Holstein knew each other. At the time of the initial investigation, troopers said a person connected to the shooting was cooperating with authorities, and the case was being examined as one that could involve a claim of self-defense. Troopers also said there was not believed to be any danger to the public.
No suspect was publicly identified in the available reports, and early coverage stated that no one had been taken into custody and that no charges had been filed at that time. Holstein was later remembered in obituary notices as a young man from Alkol whose funeral service was held at Koontz Funeral Home in Hamlin, with interment following at Moore Cemetery in Sumerco.
