In the early morning hours of June 27, 2023, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of Montgomery, West Virginia, leaving two men dead in the street. One of the victims was Zion Mitchell, a 23-year-old Black / African American male from Charleston. He, along with 36-year-old Craig Kinder of Mount Carbon, was found fatally shot near a Family Dollar on Route 61 in the Kanawha County section of the city.
