In the quiet community of Mount Hope, West Virginia, a grim discovery unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, September 5, 2023, shattering the calm of the Price Hill area. What was initially reported as a shooting incident with a suspect still on the scene threatening self-harm, tragically culminated in the deaths of three men in what authorities have described as a double murder-suicide. One of the victims was James Hurley Schrader, a 58-year-old male resident of Mount Hope.
Law enforcement officers from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department responded to a residence on Legends Highway where they were confronted with a tense and dangerous situation. After gaining entry into the home, they found three individuals deceased from gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly identified the deceased as James Hurley Schrader, his 59-year-old brother, Henry C.
Schrader, and 24-year-old Jesse Dech.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff, the preliminary investigation suggests that Jesse Dech was the perpetrator of this violent act. It is believed that Dech gained access to the Schrader's home and fatally shot both James and Henry before turning the weapon on himself. The motive for this tragic event has not been publicly released, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden and devastating loss.
The investigation took another alarming turn when deputies executed a search warrant at Jesse Dech's residence. There, they uncovered materials and precursors for the construction of a pressure bomb. This discovery added a new and disturbing layer to the case, prompting a broader investigation into the perpetrator's background and intentions. In the wake of these events, no arrests have been made, as the sole suspect is deceased. The community of Mount Hope was left to mourn the loss of the Schrader brothers and ponder the circumstances that led to such a tragic end.
