In the small town of Circleville, Utah, the life of 16-year-old Jacqueline Nuñez, a White/Caucasian female, was tragically cut short on the night of Sunday, January 8, 2023. A sophomore at Piute High School, Jacqueline was known for her vibrant and kind-hearted nature. She was an active and beloved member of her school community, participating in sports including volleyball, basketball, and softball.
Her friends and family remember her as a light-hearted and funny individual who brought joy to those around her.
On that fateful evening, Jacqueline was with her 17-year-old boyfriend, Francisco Daniel Aguilar. According to reports from the Piute County Sheriff's Office, an altercation occurred between them. As Jacqueline attempted to flee from Aguilar's vehicle and run towards her friends' car, he shot her in the leg. Aguilar then fired at her friends' car, forcing them to drive away from the scene. He then walked over to Jacqueline and shot her in the head. First responders found her deceased on a dirt road just north of Circleville.
Following the shooting, a search for the suspect ensued. Francisco Daniel Aguilar was located and arrested later that night near Salina, approximately 70 miles north of Circleville. He was taken into custody and subsequently admitted to killing Nuñez.
The Piute County Attorney's Office took the significant step of charging Aguilar as an adult. The charges filed against him included aggravated murder and attempted murder, reflecting the gravity of the crime. Francisco Daniel Aguilar later pleaded guilty to the murder charges and was sentenced to prison.
The community of Circleville was left in a state of shock and mourning. Vigils were held to honor Jacqueline's memory, where friends, family, and community members gathered to share stories and support one another through their collective grief. Many remembered her as a kind, energetic, and beautiful person who was a significant part of their small, close-knit town.
