On a winter day in the small town of Enoch, Utah, a welfare check on January 4, 2023, led to a grim discovery that shattered the community's sense of peace. Inside a home on Albert Drive, police found the bodies of eight family members, all of whom had been fatally shot. Among the victims was Gail Earl, a 78-year-old Caucasian female. She was found in the master bedroom alongside her daughter, Tausha Haight.
The investigation soon revealed the incident was a murder-suicide orchestrated
by Gail's son-in-law, 42-year-old Michael Haight. Evidence showed that Michael had systematically shot and killed his wife Tausha, their five children—three daughters aged 17, 12, and 7, and two sons aged 7 and 4—and his mother-in-law, Gail, before taking his own life. The tragedy unfolded just two weeks after Tausha, 40, had filed for divorce. Gail had reportedly been staying at the home to support her daughter during the separation.
Authorities identified Michael Haight as the sole suspect, and as he was deceased at the scene, no arrests were made. The investigation uncovered a history of turmoil within the household. Police had previously investigated Michael for child abuse in 2020 after his eldest daughter reported he had assaulted her. He had also recently been fired from his job. A handwritten suicide note found at the scene revealed Michael's anger, in which he blamed his wife for the family's troubles and stated he would rather "rot in hell" than deal with what he described as her control over him. The horrific event left the tight-knit community mourning the loss of an entire family.
