On a Sunday afternoon, August 25, 2024, the life of 14-year-old John Mula, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in what police have described as a targeted, gang-related shooting. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. at the Monaco Apartments in Millcreek, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. John was walking through the apartment complex when a brown Chevy Impala approached.
Three individuals, all wearing black hoodies with black and white bandanas covering their faces, exited the vehicle and opened fire on the teenager. Despite attempts to save him, John was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
The investigation into John's death led to the swift apprehension of multiple suspects. Authorities have charged seven individuals in connection with the homicide, including two adults and five teenagers. Jayvon Dajon Cooper, 20, and Jaden Dino Papenfuss, 17, are facing charges of murder, obstruction of justice, and multiple counts of discharging a firearm. Four other teenagers, with ages ranging from 14 to 17, have also been charged as co-defendants in the case. Additionally, Jaden Papenfuss's mother, 36-year-old Whitney Michelle Vasquez, has been charged with obstruction of justice.
According to investigators, the suspects were all associated with the same gang. It is believed that the shooting was a planned attack in retaliation for a previous gang-related incident. Evidence gathered from social media showed that the suspects had discussed a confrontation with John prior to the shooting. In one message, Cooper allegedly requested a gun, claiming John had been harassing his family. On the day of the shooting, Papenfuss is said to have identified John to the others in the car, telling them to get out and shoot him. Prosecutors have noted that it is a common tactic for older gang members to involve younger individuals in violent crimes due to the more lenient penalties in the juvenile justice system. The investigation also revealed that after the shooting, Papenfuss's mother allegedly instructed an elderly man to remove stickers from the getaway car in an attempt to alter its appearance.
