An 18-year-old Black / African American male named Talib Ahmed, also known as "Kunda," was killed on November 11, 2022, in what police have described as a gang-related shooting. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven located at 4051 S. State Street in Millcreek, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. An altercation that began inside the convenience store between two groups of individuals spilled out into the parking lot and escalated into a deadly confrontation.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began when a Lexus carrying Talib Ahmed and four other people pulled into the 7-Eleven parking lot. Shortly after, a Chrysler 300 with at least three occupants, including Houssein Musse and Salman Farhan Ahmed, arrived and parked nearby. Musse and Salman Ahmed entered the store, followed by Talib Ahmed. After a brief period, all three men exited the store and walked to the north side of the building where the shooting began. Talib Ahmed was shot four times.
Following the shooting, the occupants of the Lexus transported Talib Ahmed to the Intermountain Medical Center, where they left him before fleeing the scene. He was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Salman Ahmed was also injured during the exchange, sustaining a gunshot wound to his abdomen, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. When police arrived at the 7-Eleven, they found Musse and Salman Ahmed emerging from behind a fence of a neighboring auto body shop with their hands in the air. The owner of the auto body shop later discovered blood and two guns under a car on his lot.
Several arrests have been made in connection with the death of Talib Ahmed. Houssein Musse, 18, and Salman Farhan Ahmed, 19, were both charged with murder, three counts of discharge of a firearm, and obstructing justice. Joshua Harun Nena, 23, the cousin of Talib Ahmed and the owner of the Lexus, was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice after he initially reported his car as stolen two days after the shooting, a story he later recanted. His brother, Yessa Harun Nena, 20, was also later charged with obstruction of justice and failing to respond to an officer's signal to stop, as he was identified as one of the individuals who pursued Musse and Salman Ahmed after the shooting and allegedly fired a weapon. Another individual, Miguel Jerald Yipa, was identified as a material witness to the shooting and was later arrested for failing to appear in court to testify.
