On April 26, 2024, the body of Dennis R. Jones Jr., a 55-year-old White male from Fort Dodge, Iowa, was discovered in a rural ditch in Webster County by a mail carrier. An investigation into his death quickly led to the arrest of his two sons, Alec R. Jones, 26, and Nathan T. Jones, 21.
Investigators determined that Dennis Jones had been shot and killed at his residence in Fort Dodge before his body was moved to the location where it was found. According to court documents, Alec Jones shot his father multiple times between April 25 and April 26, 2024, following a domestic dispute. Prosecutors stated that Alec was upset about the living situation, which included his father's drug use and alleged abuse of his mother, Shannon. The situation reportedly escalated on April 25 when Dennis allegedly struck his wife.
Following the shooting, it is alleged that Alec and Nathan Jones worked together to move their father's body to the rural ditch. Initially, Alec Jones was charged with first-degree murder, and Nathan Jones was charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder. The charges against Nathan were later upgraded to first-degree murder.
During the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings, it was revealed that the brothers made admissions to the crime and were implicated by other witnesses. Physical evidence was also located that supported the narrative of the crime. An autopsy confirmed that Dennis Jones died from three gunshot wounds. Toxicology reports also indicated the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamines in his system. In June 2025, a third individual, Aidan D. Pate, 23, was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse and accessory after the fact for his alleged role in the events following the murder. Pate was identified as a friend of the Jones brothers and the driver of a vehicle seen at the Jones' home on the night of the murder.
Alec Jones was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. His brother, Nathan Jones, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, abuse of a corpse, and accessory after the fact, receiving a 22-year prison sentence.
