On a Sunday morning in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the community awoke to a grim discovery that would unravel a story of violence and loss. The life of 25-year-old Michael Olandian Anderson Jr., an African American man, was cut short on April 28, 2024. His body was found by a person walking their dog near the entrance of the Western Trails Historic Center on South 24th Street.
This came just hours after another man, 36-year-old Deonte Ivory, was found deceased on the roadway in the 2100 block of South 29th Street. Both men, who were from Omaha, Nebraska, had been fatally shot.
The Council Bluffs Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the two deaths. It was soon determined that Anderson and Ivory were associates of 30-year-old Dequanta R. Zachary of Council Bluffs. Through a combination of evidence, including cell phone records, social media activity, surveillance footage, and witness statements, investigators were able to piece together the events of that tragic day. A suspect vehicle was identified and later found in Mills County, further solidifying the case against Zachary.
The investigation led to the swift apprehension of Dequanta Zachary. He was located in Blair, Nebraska, and taken into custody on April 29, 2024, initially on an outstanding warrant for first-degree theft. Subsequently, he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Michael Anderson Jr. and Deonte Ivory, as well as one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. The evidence against him was substantial, including DNA evidence of one of the victim's blood on his clothing.
In October 2024, a jury found Dequanta Zachary guilty on all charges. The trial brought a measure of justice to the families of the victims. For the murders of Michael Olandian Anderson Jr. and Deonte Ivory, Zachary received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions on that fateful April day.
