In the winter of 2015, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 16-year-old Niani Rayshawn Allen, a Black female and a junior at Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix, Arizona. On the night of February 20th, what began as a dispute at a high school basketball game escalated into a tragedy that would forever alter the lives of two families. Allen was a passenger in a sedan when another vehicle, an SUV, began to follow them from the school's parking lot.
Near the intersection of
67th Avenue and Broadway Road, the situation took a fatal turn. Jason Christopher Lindsey, then 18 years old, fired a gun from the passenger window of the SUV into the car carrying Niani. She was struck in the head, the only occupant of the vehicle to be hit. In a desperate attempt to save her, her friends drove to a nearby Walmart for help. From there, Niani was rushed to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead.
The investigation into Niani's death moved swiftly. Police located the suspect's SUV at an apartment complex and, following a foot chase, apprehended Jason Lindsey. During the pursuit, officers discovered a discarded firearm that was later confirmed to be the weapon used in the shooting, bearing Lindsey's fingerprints. Lindsey was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, drive-by shooting, and three counts of aggravated assault. Though he admitted to firing at the vehicle, he denied any intention of harming anyone inside.
Jason Lindsey's case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial where he was found guilty on all charges by a jury in November 2018. In February 2019, a judge sentenced him to life in prison for his role in the death of Niani Allen, a young girl whose life was tragically ended over a trivial argument.
