In the early morning hours of August 18, 2015, a grim discovery was made in the quiet desert landscape of Tonopah, Arizona. The bodies of 18-year-old Jesse Romero, a male, and 17-year-old Sophia Gibbs were found near Salome Highway and 411th Avenue. Both had been fatally shot in what authorities quickly determined to be a double homicide.

A passerby first spotted Sophia's body on the side of the road at approximately 5:45 a.m. and alerted the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. As deputies ...
