In the early evening of October 13, 2015, a sense of normalcy was shattered at a residence in the 1400 block of East Grant Road in Tucson, Arizona. Inside the home lived 20-year-old Zachary Corbut, a White/Caucasian male with a noted aptitude for math and science that had earned him a place in the National Honor Society. That evening, several masked individuals forcibly entered the home from the rear in what investigators would later describe as a targeted home invasion.
The intruders assaulted two of Zachary's 20-year-old roommates with firearms, though both would survive the ordeal.
Amid the chaos, Zachary emerged from his bedroom. The intruders then shot him multiple times. Tucson police responded to a call about the shooting just after 6:00 p.m. and found Zachary inside with gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene, less than a month before what would have been his 21st birthday. While his roommates survived the physical assault, the incident left a lasting and tragic impact on their lives and the life of Zachary's family.
In the years following the murder, the case has grown cold, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. The Tucson Police Department's investigation remains open, but without significant breakthroughs. In an effort to bring her son's killers to justice, Zachary's mother, Ann Corbut, has tirelessly advocated for information. Her efforts have included putting up billboards and bus stop bench signs across Tucson displaying her son's image and publicizing the reward for information. The Pima County Attorney's Office is offering a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Despite these efforts and periodic investigative leads, those responsible for the death of Zachary Corbut remain at large.
