In the fall of 2017, a domestic dispute in a Phoenix, Arizona apartment complex escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 23-year-old Jasmine Reina Ponce. On the evening of Sunday, October 29, 2017, an argument broke out between Christopher Michael Kraft and his neighbors at their residence near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. Ponce, who was 36 weeks pregnant at the time, attempted to intervene and de-escalate the volatile situation.
As the confrontation intensified, Kraft
reportedly went into his apartment to retrieve a handgun. In a heroic effort to prevent further violence, Ponce grabbed Kraft to stop him from confronting the neighbors again. It was at this moment that Kraft is said to have turned the weapon on her, firing a single, fatal shot to her head.
Despite the grievous injury that led to her untimely death, a glimmer of hope emerged from the devastating event. Medical professionals were miraculously able to deliver her unborn baby, who survived the ordeal. Christopher Michael Kraft was subsequently taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He was held on a $150,000 bond.
