In the early morning hours of April 6, 2018, the sound of gunshots pierced the quiet of a neighborhood on Tucson's southwest side. When police arrived at the area of West 20th Street and South Farmington Road at approximately 1:14 a.m., they discovered 36-year-old Roberto Varela inside his maroon 2007 Hyundai coupe, suffering from obvious signs of gunshot trauma.
Officers immediately began to render aid to the wounded man, and paramedics were summoned to the scene.
Members of the Tucson Fire Department transported Varela to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. For two days, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital on April 8, 2018. He was a male.
Detectives investigating the homicide learned that a black coupe was seen leaving the area shortly after the shots were fired. However, neither the vehicle nor any suspects have been identified in connection with the fatal shooting. The Tucson Police Department's investigation into the death of Roberto Varela is ongoing, and they have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. The killer remains at large, and the motive for the shooting is unknown.
