Brian Krumm, a 36-year-old male, died on August 21, 2019, in Tucson, Arizona. A 13-year veteran of the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Krumm was on duty as a corrections officer at the Pima County Superior Court at the time of the incident. Around 11:30 a.m., he was discovered in a secure area of the courthouse, not accessible to the public, with a fatal gunshot wound.
The courthouse was placed on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes following the discovery.
Authorities, including Sheriff Mark Napier, quickly stated that the public was not in any danger and that they were not looking for any suspects in connection with the death. It was emphasized that the fatal injury was not the result of any altercation with an inmate or any other person, and it was believed Krumm was alone when the incident occurred.
An investigation into the death was initiated. The subsequent autopsy determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. However, the medical examiner could not definitively determine the manner of death, leaving it classified as undetermined between a suicide or an accidental shooting. The report noted that it was unclear if the wound was the result of a willful act or an accident while handling his firearm. There have been no reports of any arrests or suspects in this case, and the investigation concluded that no foul play was involved.
