In the early evening of December 3, 2019, the life of 19-year-old Matthew Chamberlain was tragically cut short in a residential area of Phoenix, Arizona. The young man was discovered lifeless in the roadway near 64th Street and Thunderbird Road, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene, initiating a homicide investigation into what detectives would soon characterize as an illicit marijuana transaction gone horribly wrong.
The investigation
into Matthew's death took a dramatic and misleading turn in its initial stages. A man named Camden Oberndorfer, aged 20, was identified as a person of interest. During questioning, Oberndorfer concocted a detailed but false narrative, implicating a friend, Tyler O'Donnell, in the robbery and murder of Chamberlain. Based on this seemingly credible account, which was bolstered by anonymous tips and social media chatter, police arrested O'Donnell. However, as detectives delved deeper into the case, inconsistencies in Oberndorfer's story began to emerge, eventually leading them to the conclusion that O'Donnell was an innocent man who had been deliberately and falsely accused. O'Donnell was subsequently released from custody.
The focus of the investigation then shifted back to Camden Oberndorfer and a new person of interest, 20-year-old Francisco Gonzales. With the truth of O'Donnell's innocence established, investigators uncovered evidence that pointed to Oberndorfer and Gonzales as the true perpetrators of the crime. Following his arrest, Gonzales reportedly admitted to his involvement in the deadly encounter. Both Oberndorfer and Gonzales were ultimately charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and violation of probation. In addition to these serious charges, Oberndorfer faced further legal trouble for fabricating a story that led to the wrongful arrest of an innocent individual.
