In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 37-year-old Daniel Antonio Ortiz was tragically cut short. On November 1, 2020, Ortiz was inside Ten's Showclub, a gentlemen's club in midtown, when a man entered the establishment and opened fire. The sudden eruption of violence left Ortiz with fatal gunshot wounds. He was the sole individual struck by the gunfire.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Ortiz was rushed to Banner University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Tucson Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives began processing the scene at the club, located on Speedway Boulevard, and interviewed several witnesses who were present during the terrifying event. A key piece of evidence emerged in the form of surveillance video, which captured the chilling moments of the attack. The footage showed the suspect arriving in a late 1990s or early 2000s four-door sedan, which had a noticeable feature: the driver's side tail light was out.
Within days of the shooting, investigators were able to identify a suspect. On November 6, 2020, Stanley Jerome Calvin, then 37 years old, was arrested in connection with the death of Daniel Ortiz. Calvin was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and drive-by shooting. He was booked into the Pima County Jail as the legal process against him began.
After nearly three years in custody, the case against Stanley Jerome Calvin came to a resolution in September 2023. Calvin pleaded guilty to the deadly shooting. In court, he was sentenced to five years of probation for his role in the death of Daniel Ortiz. Having already served a significant amount of time in the Pima County Jail leading up to his sentencing, Calvin was released from custody following the court's decision.
