In the early morning hours of May 9, 2021, a dispute at a Phoenix establishment located in the area of 6100 North 27th Avenue would tragically end the life of 29-year-old Ruben Sekiseka. At approximately 1:37 a.m., Phoenix police officers were dispatched to the scene following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male, later identified as Sekiseka, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response from the Phoenix Fire Department, Ruben Sekiseka was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial accounts of the incident were clouded by a false narrative provided by the armed security guard on duty, 34-year-old Serafin Chavez. Following an altercation, Chavez had escorted Sekiseka out of the establishment. When questioned by investigators, Chavez initially claimed that Sekiseka had shot himself as he was leaving. However, as the investigation progressed, detectives uncovered evidence that contradicted Chavez's statement.
Further investigation revealed that it was Chavez who had, in fact, shot Sekiseka. In an attempt to conceal his actions, Chavez hid the expended casing from his firearm before the police arrived. Faced with the evidence, the narrative shifted, and Serafin Chavez became the primary suspect in the homicide. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail. Chavez faced charges of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
