He filled countless sketchbooks with his street art-style drawings and expressed himself through writing and reading.
A man who took pride in his appearance, Jose was described by his family as a perfectionist who wouldn't leave home without his clothes perfectly ironed.
The fatal incident occurred at a residence near El Mirage Road and Elwood Street. Following a physical altercation with his brother, Oscar Marquez, Jose was shot. The single gunshot wound was to his stomach, and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Jose was a father to three children, Stonie, Ryder, and Jerzey, whom he adored and considered his greatest motivation. He was also a beloved son to Jesus Marquez and Solia Castañeda, and a brother to Oscar, David, Jasmine, Noemi, and Berenice.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Avondale police arrested Jose's 30-year-old brother, Oscar Marquez. According to court documents, Oscar claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense, stating that he only intended to shoot his brother in the leg to stop an assault. He was subsequently booked into jail and faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder.
