In the early morning hours of a December Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona, a sequence of events unfolded inside a parked car that left two people dead and a community in mourning. Caelee Lovelight, a 27-year-old Latina transgender woman, was found unresponsive in a vehicle near 23rd Avenue and Baseline Road. She had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, which police responded to as an 'unknown trouble call' at approximately 3:25 a.m., also involved a 47-year-old man named Javin Casillias.
When officers arrived, they discovered Casillias in the car with serious injuries from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators believe that a violent physical altercation took place between Lovelight and Casillias inside the vehicle, resulting in both of their deaths. At this time, authorities have not indicated that they are searching for any other suspects.
Friends of Lovelight described her as a deeply religious and spiritual person who was a passionate advocate for nonbinary and transgender individuals. Originally from Texas, she had relocated to Portland, where she legally changed her name and gender marker, before eventually moving to Phoenix. The mother of Javin Casillias has stated her belief that her son, who was disabled, acted in self-defense during the altercation, claiming that Lovelight had attacked him. As of late 2022, Lovelight's death was noted as one of at least 40 violent deaths of transgender people in the United States that year.
