On the afternoon of March 20, 2023, a grim discovery was made in a commercial area of Phoenix, Arizona. Twenty-year-old Osvaldo Hernandez Castillo, a Hispanic male, was found deceased inside his car near 24th Avenue and Mission Lane. First responders arrived at the scene of what was initially an unknown trouble call to find Hernandez Castillo in the driver's seat with gunshot wounds. Despite medical aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy would later confirm he had been shot from behind, with wounds to his head and back.
For eight months, the case remained active with no arrests, leaving a family devastated and searching for answers. The breakthrough came unexpectedly through a separate homicide investigation. In November 2023, police were investigating the brutal murder of 30-year-old Bernardo Pantaleon. One of the suspects in custody for that crime was 21-year-old Leonardo Santiago. While examining Santiago's cellphone as part of the Pantaleon investigation, detectives uncovered shocking digital evidence: a video of Hernandez Castillo's murder.
The investigation into Hernandez Castillo’s death revealed that he had been lured to his death through the social media app Snapchat. Leonardo Santiago had arranged to meet him under the pretense of a sexual encounter. Santiago’s true motive, as he later confessed to investigators, was to rob Hernandez Castillo to gain money, marijuana, and, most importantly, recognition from his street gang. When Hernandez Castillo attempted to conceal his phone, possibly to call for help, Santiago shot him twice.
Following the discovery of the video, Santiago was questioned on December 7, 2023. He admitted to his involvement, confirming that he had communicated with, shot, and killed Osvaldo Hernandez Castillo. He also confirmed that he recorded the entire horrifying act on his phone. The arrest brought some measure of resolution to Hernandez Castillo's grieving family, who had endured months of uncertainty. Santiago was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death, a case solved through the digital trail left on a killer's own device.
