In the summer of 2023, the quiet community of Casa Grande, Arizona, was unsettled by the grim discovery of the remains of 57-year-old Thomas Chase. The chain of events leading to this tragic finding began in the early morning hours of July 24th, when the Casa Grande Fire Department responded to a call about a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed a person fleeing the scene.
After extinguishing a fire in a 55-gallon metal barrel, they made a horrific discovery: the partial human remains of a body inside.
The investigation into the gruesome finding quickly unfolded when, about 30 minutes later, 32-year-old Christopher Lawrence Chase called 911. In his call, he admitted to disposing of a body by burning it and fleeing when the fire department arrived. Police located Christopher at a nearby residence where he was holding three people, a 57-year-old woman, a 68-year-old man, and a 41-year-old man, at gunpoint. It was revealed that he had demanded the keys to their vehicle before ultimately deciding to turn himself in. Fortunately, none of the hostages were physically harmed.
Subsequent investigations by the Casa Grande Police Department revealed a story of familial violence that had taken place two days prior, on July 22nd. Authorities determined that Christopher and his father, Thomas, had been involved in a physical altercation at Thomas's home. This confrontation escalated, leading to Christopher fatally shooting his father. In the aftermath of the shooting, Christopher dismembered his father's body.
The investigation also implicated another family member in the crime. Christopher's 56-year-old mother, Melissa Lynne Chase, was found to have aided her son in the concealment and cleanup of the evidence following the murder. Christopher Chase was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including murder, abandonment/concealment of a dead body, kidnapping, aggravated assault, burglary, and tampering with evidence. Melissa Chase was also arrested and faced charges of abandonment/concealment of a dead body and tampering with evidence.
