In the crisp late autumn air of Phoenix, Arizona, a night of youthful plans turned into a scene of indelible tragedy. On the evening of November 28, 2023, 17-year-old Marc Leyva, a male, drove his mother's car to meet a friend at an apartment complex near 7th Avenue and Alta Vista Road. The purpose of the meeting, as it would later unfold, was to purchase a firearm from another acquaintance.
This transaction, however, was a deceptive plot, a premeditated robbery that would violently escalate and end a young life.
Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 9 p.m., Phoenix police arrived to a grim discovery. They found Leyva suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Dozens of bullet casings littered the scene, evidence of the brutal violence that had transpired. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the teenager succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The investigation into the senseless killing was immediately set in motion, with authorities piecing together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
The ensuing investigation led to the arrests of four teenagers in connection with Leyva's murder. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Dareon Harris, 19-year-old Leonard Brown, 18-year-old Takari Humphreys, and a male juvenile. According to court documents and police statements, the four had conspired to rob Leyva under the pretense of selling him a gun. Tragically, the robbery escalated, and Leyva was shot and killed. The suspects fled the scene, leaving Leyva to die. All four individuals were subsequently charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and aggravated assault, and they later admitted to their involvement in the planned robbery that resulted in Leyva's death.
