In the quiet neighborhood of Cambria in San Tan Valley, Arizona, the life of 17-year-old Jamiere Jenkins was tragically cut short on November 28, 2023. A junior at Combs High School, Jamiere was a vibrant and beloved member of his community, known for his infectious smile and his passion for football, where he played as a wide receiver. His death, the result of a single gunshot wound to the neck, sent shockwaves through the close-knit town, leaving his family, friends, and teammates grappling
with an immense loss.
The fatal encounter occurred following a verbal altercation between Jamiere and another teenager. During the argument, the other individual, identified as 17-year-old Anthony Jason Garcia, allegedly brandished a firearm and fired the shot that would end Jamiere's life. Law enforcement was called to the scene near North Cortona and Cambria Drives around 5:10 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Jamiere with a critical injury. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, his wounds proved fatal.
The investigation into Jamiere's death moved swiftly. Utilizing neighborhood Ring camera footage, authorities were able to identify a vehicle involved in the incident. The following day, Anthony Garcia was taken into custody by the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. Initially booked into the Pinal County Youth Justice Center, Garcia, a former Combs High student, was later transferred to the Pinal County Jail to be charged as an adult. A Pinal County grand jury indicted him on a charge of second-degree murder.
In the wake of his untimely death, Jamiere was remembered by his coaches, teammates, and friends as a courageous, generous, and loyal young man with a heart full of compassion. A candlelight vigil was held at the Combs High School football stadium, where his jersey, number 10, was displayed in his honor. Friends and family shared stories of his confidence and the positive impact he had on everyone he met. His family, in his obituary, lovingly recalled him as a young man full of life, laughter, and love, who was deeply devoted to them and had a strong sense of responsibility and ambition for his future.
