On a Thursday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona, a heated argument irrevocably altered the course of two lives. On May 16, 2024, at approximately 2:15 p.m., police responded to a call at a residence near 33rd Drive and Northern Avenue. Inside, they discovered 29-year-old Brandon Russell, a male, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that the shooting
stemmed from a dispute between Russell and another man. The individual who shot Russell fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. The suspect was later identified as 23-year-old Devin Gerrod Montgomery. A search for Montgomery ensued, leading officers to an apartment complex near 25th Avenue and Cactus Road.
Upon being located, Montgomery engaged with Phoenix police. He produced a handgun and fired at an officer in an unmarked vehicle, striking the car multiple times. The officer returned fire, hitting Montgomery. He ran a short distance before collapsing and was subsequently transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No police officers were injured during the exchange.
