In the early morning hours of August 15, 2024, a dispute at a popular downtown Kingman, Arizona bar tragically ended the life of 51-year-old Timothy William Prentice Sr., a well-known local businessman. The White / Caucasian male suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest following a verbal argument. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m.
outside the Sportsmans Lounge, a place many locals refer to as 'Sporty's,' located on East Andy Devine Avenue.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene where they found Prentice wounded. Lifesaving measures were initiated by both police and Kingman Fire Department personnel before he was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injury. The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 25-year-old Anthony Rodriguez as the suspect.
Following the altercation, Rodriguez left the scene as a passenger in a vehicle. The vehicle was recognized by law enforcement near the police department, and in a surprising turn of events, the driver pulled into the police department's parking lot, where Rodriguez was taken into custody. Investigators learned that the shooting followed a verbal argument between Rodriguez and Prentice. Rodriguez was subsequently booked into the Adult Detention Facility on a charge of second-degree murder.
In a later development, the Mohave County Attorney's Office initially declined to prosecute Rodriguez, citing a claim of self-defense. This decision was based on a review of evidence, which included surveillance video of the incident that occurred outside the bar. Despite the initial decision not to file charges related to the shooting, Rodriguez remained in custody on other charges. The investigation into Timothy Prentice's death is considered ongoing, and authorities have indicated that the initial stance on prosecution could change as more information becomes available. Police have also been seeking to identify and speak with any potential witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting.
