In the pre-dawn hours of Halloween 2018, the life of James Middlebrook, a 31-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in an act of violence. On October 31, 2018, Omaha police were called to the Sonesta Suites hotel in central Omaha just before 2:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Middlebrook inside an upstairs unit of the hotel. He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
