On the evening of November 21, 2020, a tragedy unfolded at a Sonic Drive-in in Bellevue, Nebraska, that claimed the life of 28-year-old Ryan Helbert, a White male. The night took a violent turn when gunfire erupted, leaving two employees, including Helbert, dead and two others wounded. This shocking event sent ripples through the community and left friends and family mourning the sudden loss of a young man known for his positive and easygoing nature.
That Saturday night, police responded
to a chaotic scene at the restaurant. Initial reports indicated a possible bomb in a U-Haul truck in the parking lot, which was found engulfed in flames. The situation was quickly updated to an active shooter incident. Inside the restaurant, officers discovered four employees who had been shot. Ryan Helbert and his co-worker, Nathan Pastrana, aged 22, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other employees were transported to the hospital with injuries.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities apprehended a suspect, 23-year-old Roberto Carlos Silva Jr., who was taken into custody without resistance near the scene. The investigation revealed a potential motive stemming from a prior incident just days before the shooting. Silva had been arrested for allegedly using another person's Sonic app to fraudulently purchase over $50 worth of food. He had been released from jail only a short time before returning to the restaurant and carrying out the deadly attack.
Silva was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and arson. The senseless act of violence left a void in the lives of those who knew Ryan Helbert, who was remembered by his parents, sisters, and a wide circle of family and friends.
