On the evening of September 12, 2021, 18-year-old Franco Vasquez, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska. The incident unfolded outside of the Dick's Sporting Goods store. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Vasquez and an 18-year-old female companion inside a Volkswagen Jetta, both having sustained gunshot wounds. Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene, having been shot three times.
The female victim was critically injured but ultimately survived her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting suggested that it occurred during a planned marijuana transaction. Evidence found in the vehicle included a ripped-open bag of marijuana. Text messages between Vasquez and one of the suspects leading up to the incident further supported the belief that the meeting was arranged for the purpose of a drug deal. It is believed that the intention of the suspects was to rob Vasquez.
In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement identified and apprehended two suspects in connection with the homicide. On September 30, 2021, the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force arrested 19-year-old J'Maun Haynie. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree assault, and two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony. Nearly a year later, on July 14, 2022, a second suspect, 21-year-old Izayah Mapp, was arrested. Mapp faced the same charges as Haynie: first-degree murder, second-degree felony assault, and two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony.
Subsequent legal proceedings revealed more details about the events of that night. It was alleged that both Haynie and Mapp brandished firearms during the encounter with Vasquez and his companion, which then escalated to the fatal shooting. DNA evidence linked Haynie to the vehicle, and social media messages from Haynie also indicated his involvement. J'Maun Haynie was later convicted on all counts and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Franco Vasquez.
