Jacob Matthew Edwards, a 6-year-old White male, died on July 9, 2018, in a mass shooting inside his family's home in the Prices Corner area of Wilmington, Delaware. At approximately 7:53 p.m., Delaware State Police responded to the residence in the 2700 block of Ferris Road. Troopers entered the two-story house and found five members of the Edwards family suffering from fatal gunshot wounds on the second floor.
Jacob was discovered with his mother, Julie Ann Burton Edwards, and his younger siblings, Brinley Ann and Paxton Reece Edwards. His father, Matthew Edwards, was also found dead inside the home.
Investigators determined that Matthew Edwards had shot and killed his wife and all three children before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Autopsies conducted by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science supported the police finding that the deaths resulted from gunfire and constituted a murder-suicide. Jacob's death was therefore not treated as an unsolved killing or as the work of an unidentified intruder; authorities identified his father as the person responsible for the entire attack.
The family was found after a child reportedly arrived at the Edwards residence for a planned sleepover and encountered the horrifying scene. The discovery brought police and emergency personnel to a quiet residential neighborhood where neighbors were accustomed to seeing the children playing and spending time with their mother. People who knew the family described the children as happy and remembered Julie as a devoted parent who regularly took them to parks and arranged activities and play dates. Jacob was also remembered in memorial accounts as a child who enjoyed music and dancing.
Reports published after the killings described possible turmoil within the Edwards household. Acquaintances said Matthew had experienced employment and marital difficulties, and some people close to the family reportedly believed he had been struggling emotionally. Those statements provided background to the tragedy, but authorities did not announce a definitive motive explaining why he killed his family. The official conclusion remained that Matthew acted alone, fatally shooting Julie, Jacob, Brinley and Paxton before ending his own life.
There were no arrests, criminal charges, court proceedings, trial or conviction in connection with Jacob's killing because the identified perpetrator died at the scene. Police did not identify any additional suspects or report evidence that another person participated in the shootings. With Matthew Edwards deceased and the forensic findings classifying the incident as a murder-suicide, the case was considered resolved without prosecution. Jacob, his mother and his siblings were later memorialized together, with funeral records confirming that they died on Monday, July 9, 2018.
