On July 13, 1999, in Mercer, Maine, 51-year-old Ethel Springer was fatally shot by her husband, 59-year-old Bryan Springer, at the town hall. After the shooting, Bryan returned to their home, set it on fire, and then died by suicide. This tragic event was classified as a domestic murder-suicide.
