In the summer of 2021, the life of Joel Edwin Williams, a 48-year-old White/Caucasian male, was cut short in Somerville, Maine. On the morning of June 30, 2021, an altercation at a residence on Rockland Road ended in his death from gunshot wounds. Williams, who was staying at the property at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the state's Chief Medical Examiner.
The incident also involved another man, Kyle Hunt, then 31, of Jefferson,
who sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation and was subsequently treated at a local hospital and released. Details of the altercation suggest a heated argument between the two men. A witness indicated that the dispute may have escalated to a physical level, with a claim that Williams had stabbed Hunt before Hunt shot Williams. The argument was reportedly over whether Hunt could use the shower at the residence where Williams was staying to grow medical marijuana.
Following an investigation by the Maine State Police and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the case was presented to a Lincoln County Grand Jury. In November of that year, the grand jury declined to indict Kyle Hunt on any charges related to Williams' death. Subsequently, the Maine Attorney General's Office announced that no criminal charges would be filed against Hunt.
