On the morning of January 12, 2023, a dispute over stolen clothes set in motion a chain of events that would end the life of Mark Forest, a 37-year-old Caucasian male from Berwick, Maine. Inside a residence on Katabel Lane, an argument had broken out between Forest and Luann Lafrenier. Feeling threatened, Ms. Lafrenier called her son, Daniel LaFrenier, asking him to come and get her.
Not long after his arrival, the tension in the house escalated into a heated argument involving Daniel LaFrenier and Forest.
The verbal altercation quickly turned deadly when LaFrenier brandished a handgun and pointed it at Mark Forest's head. According to police reports, Forest attempted to push the firearm away or grab it, and in the ensuing struggle, the gun discharged. A single shot struck Forest in the head. In the immediate aftermath, LaFrenier reportedly apologized to his mother, claiming the gun had simply "gone off." Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with one person yelling, "There's blood everywhere." Emergency services were called, and Berwick police arrived around 8 a.m. to find Forest gravely wounded. He was rushed to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in nearby Dover, New Hampshire, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Investigators quickly identified Daniel LaFrenier, a 31-year-old from Rochester, New Hampshire, as a person of interest. An attempt-to-locate alert was issued to area law enforcement agencies. Later that same day, police in York, Maine, responded to a report of a man attempting to force his way into a home. They found LaFrenier at the scene and took him into custody for questioning. Following an interview, he was arrested and charged with the murder of Mark Forest.
Initially, LaFrenier was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, due to a prior felony conviction. He pleaded not guilty to these charges. However, in June 2024, he reached a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In September 2024, a judge sentenced Daniel LaFrenier to 16 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of Mark Forest.
