On the night of July 28, 2023, a passing motorist on Old Belgrade Road in Augusta, Maine, made a grim discovery. Lying on the side of the road was 34-year-old Tyler Robinson, a male resident of Augusta. The driver immediately called 911 at approximately 10:09 p.m., but despite efforts to revive him, Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene. Augusta Police initially responded to what was considered a suspicious death and secured the area through the night before the investigation was handed
over to the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit. An autopsy conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner the following day confirmed the tragic nature of the event: Tyler Robinson's death was a homicide, the result of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation into Robinson's death soon focused on a man who was known to him, 34-year-old Andrew Redmond. According to court documents that were later unsealed, the fatal encounter was the culmination of a plan that had gone horribly wrong. Redmond and a group of other men had allegedly conspired to scare and assault Robinson on Shovelhead Lane, a short, dead-end road where Robinson was reportedly living in a tent and involved in selling drugs. That night, Robinson's girlfriend had driven him to the location, where Redmond allegedly forced her out of her vehicle at gunpoint and told her to go inside a nearby residence.
The plan to simply beat up Robinson escalated dramatically when he attempted to flee. As Robinson ran, another man reportedly fired a shotgun with rubber bullets at him but missed. Redmond, however, pursued Robinson on an ATV, caught up with him, and shot him in the chest with a handgun. Following the shooting, Redmond reportedly expressed that "it wasn't supposed to go down like that" to Robinson's girlfriend.
In the aftermath of the killing, Andrew Redmond fled the state. For nearly two months, law enforcement agencies searched for him. The manhunt crossed multiple states and concluded on September 11, 2023, when police in Biloxi, Mississippi, located Redmond and his wife, 33-year-old Danielle Redmond, traveling on Interstate 10. After a brief chase, Redmond pulled over and was arrested for the murder of Tyler Robinson. His wife was also taken into custody and charged with failing to comply with officers. Redmond was extradited back to Maine to face justice.
Andrew Redmond was initially held without bail and in October was indicted on a charge of intentional or knowing murder. He initially pleaded not guilty in November 2023. However, he later changed his plea. On May 28, 2025, Andrew Redmond pleaded guilty to the murder of Tyler Robinson. In a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. Prosecutors noted that the sentence was on the lower end for such a crime but was agreed upon due to challenges in the case, including witnesses who were using drugs at the time of the incident.
