In the autumn of 2014, the life of 36-year-old David Leroy Vallie Sr. was tragically cut short. On October 2, 2014, Vallie was discovered in the front yard of a residence at 619 North 31st Street in Billings, Montana. He had sustained a single, fatal gunshot wound to his abdomen. Emergency services were called to the scene, but nothing could be done to save him.
The incident was quickly determined to be a homicide, launching an investigation by the Billings Police Department.
The subsequent investigation into David Vallie's death led authorities to a suspect, Michael Martinez. A critical piece of evidence that linked Martinez to the crime was discovered on his cellphone. Investigators found a photograph of the crime scene set as the background image on his device. This discovery proved instrumental in building a case against him. It was also determined that the weapon used in the shooting, a 9mm Glock Model 17, had been stolen from a Bureau of Indian Affairs special agent's vehicle prior to the homicide.
Ultimately, Michael Martinez was arrested and charged with deliberate homicide for the shooting death of David Vallie. In December of 2015, Martinez was convicted of the crime. The tragic and violent end to David Leroy Vallie's life left a lasting impact on the Billings community, and the ensuing trial brought to light issues surrounding firearm security. Following his death, traditional wake and funeral services were held, with his interment at the Allison Bixby Memorial Cemetery.
