In the fall of 2018, the life of 31-year-old Megan McLaughlin, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at a Missoula, Montana motel. On October 19, 2018, what began as a dispute over drugs escalated into a brutal attack that left McLaughlin and another individual, Jason Flink, dead and a third person, Kaleb Williams, seriously injured.
The events leading to the deaths began when two men, Jonathan Reed Whitworth and Preston Rossbach, went to the Mountain Valley
Inn Motel seeking to confront a drug dealer who had allegedly sold them "bad drugs". The dealer was not present in the motel room, but the situation quickly turned violent. Whitworth, who had been using methamphetamine for days leading up to the incident, opened fire, shooting McLaughlin, Flink, and Williams. Rossbach also participated in the attack, stabbing the victims. McLaughlin was shot in the back of the head, an injury so severe that it necessitated a closed casket at her funeral.
Following the deadly assault, both Whitworth and Rossbach were apprehended and faced charges of deliberate homicide and assault with a weapon. In August 2020, Jonathan Reed Whitworth pleaded guilty to two counts of deliberate homicide and assault with a weapon. He was subsequently sentenced to 100 years in prison with no possibility of parole for at least 30 years. His co-defendant, Preston Rossbach, was convicted by a jury in March 2020 and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. The tragic death of Megan McLaughlin served as a grim reminder of the violent consequences that can accompany the world of illegal drugs.
