On a summer evening in East Glacier Park, Montana, the Siau family was out for a walk when their lives were irrevocably shattered. McKenzie Siau, a 1-year-old White/Caucasian female, was with her family on July 17, 2022, when a man deliberately drove his pickup truck into the group. The driver, identified as Derick Amos Madden, then crashed his vehicle into a tree, emerged with a shotgun, and began a horrific assault on the family.
Madden first shot and killed 39-year-old David Siau, McKenzie's father. As the family scattered in terror, McKenzie's mother, Christy Siau, fled with her daughter in her arms. Madden continued shooting at the fleeing family members, striking Christy and fatally wounding little McKenzie. The attack did not end there.
After running out of ammunition, Madden pulled out a knife and turned his attention to Christina Siau, David's sister.
Despite being critically injured in the initial vehicular assault and then stabbed, Christina Siau fought back against her attacker. In a desperate struggle for her life, she managed to fatally wound Madden, ending his rampage. When first responders arrived at the chaotic scene, they found David Siau and Derick Amos Madden deceased. Christy, Christina, and McKenzie were all critically injured and rushed for medical treatment. Tragically, McKenzie Siau was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Her mother and aunt survived their severe injuries. Two other young children of David and Christy Siau were present during the attack but managed to escape without physical harm.
Investigators determined that the perpetrator, Derick Amos Madden, had been in a prior relationship with Christina Siau and had a history of mental health issues. As Madden was killed at the scene by one of his victims, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of McKenzie and David Siau. The incident was a targeted attack that ended in a tragic loss of life, leaving a family and a community in mourning.
