In the spring of 1999, Fred Palahniuk, a 59-year-old male, had found a new relationship with Donna Fontaine. Their time together, however, would be tragically short-lived. On the evening of May 29, 1999, in the rural quiet of Latah County, Idaho, a fire was reported at a two-story garage on a remote property. When the flames were finally extinguished, a grim discovery was made in the charred rubble: the bodies of Fred Palahniuk and Donna Fontaine.
