On a Sunday evening in Boise, Idaho, a dispute over a traffic maneuver tragically escalated, ending the life of 38-year-old Hispanic male, Luis Rey Lara. The events of November 6, 2016, unfolded when Jacob D. Wall, then 21, cut off Lara on Five Mile Road. This led to a heated confrontation at a stoplight, where Lara exited his vehicle and approached Wall's pickup truck. An argument ensued, with Lara reportedly throwing punches through Wall's open window.
In response, Wall grabbed a handgun from his center console and shot Lara in the shoulder.
Following the initial shot, the encounter could have de-escalated. Lara, injured, retreated to his own vehicle and began asking bystanders to call for help. However, instead of driving away, Wall exited his truck, armed with the Glock. 45-caliber handgun, and pursued Lara. A second altercation occurred, during which Wall tackled Lara, and a struggle ensued on the ground. During this fight, Wall shot the unarmed Lara multiple times in the abdomen. Luis Rey Lara succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds at the scene before medical help could arrive. He was a husband and a loving father to four children.
Jacob D. Wall was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder. During the investigation, it was revealed that Wall had a previous charge related to a road rage incident in 2015. In an interview with police, Wall expressed anger towards Lara, making derogatory remarks about him. In July 2017, Wall entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after three years.
