In the quiet farming town of Minidoka, Idaho, a violent encounter on the evening of April 28, 2018, left a family shattered and a community in shock. Rafael Gil Vargas, a 43-year-old Hispanic male, was shot and fatally wounded in an incident that also injured a young woman. The shooting, which authorities later described as stemming from a domestic dispute, cut short the life of a man remembered by his loved ones.
That Saturday night, Minidoka County Sheriff's deputies were called to the
scene of the shooting around 10 p.m. They discovered two victims, Rafael Gil Vargas and 19-year-old Nallely Vargas Juarez. Emergency responders acted quickly, and Rafael was airlifted to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello for treatment of his critical injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Nallely, who was also shot during the altercation, was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries and later released.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly led to a suspect. Denis Orlando Lopez-Serrano, a 22-year-old man from the nearby town of Rupert, was taken into custody in connection with the incident. Authorities revealed that the violence was rooted in a domestic relationship, as Nallely was reportedly Lopez-Serrano's ex-girlfriend and the two shared a child. Court documents later indicated that Lopez-Serrano allegedly approached the vehicle occupied by his ex-girlfriend and her father, threatened them with a firearm, and then opened fire after breaking a car window.
Following his arrest, Denis Orlando Lopez-Serrano faced a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Rafael Gil Vargas, attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Nallely Vargas Juarez, and two counts of kidnapping. He was booked into the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center and held without bond as the legal proceedings against him began. The case was eventually moved to a district court to be adjudicated.
