In June 1982, 17-year-old Dewayne Surls, a student at Moscow High School in Idaho, embarked on a trip to Boise with his friend, Michael Coffin. On June 14, while driving near Riggins, Idaho, their 1976 blue Datsun appeared to have veered off the road into the Salmon River, as indicated by paint marks on nearby rocks. Due to high river conditions, divers were unable to search for the vehicle or the boys. Coffin's body was later recovered 25 miles downstream, but Surls remained missing.
