In the quiet woods of Murray, Idaho, a hunting trip among family and friends took a tragic turn on the evening of October 12, 2015. Stephen Davis, a 60-year-old male from Florida who also maintained a residence in the small Idaho community, had just concluded a day of hunting. As the group was securing their weapons, a single shot shattered the evening calm.
Davis had been on the back steps of a residence on Prichard Creek Road, in the process of removing his shoes. He was still wearing a. 44 magnum revolver in a shoulder holster. In a devastating turn of events, the firearm discharged, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
His companions, hearing the shot, rushed to his side to find him grievously injured and his revolver on the ground. They immediately administered first aid while emergency services were summoned. Despite their efforts and the arrival of Northwest Medstar and Prichard/Murray Volunteer Fire and Medical personnel, Davis succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the incident. Based on the evidence and witness statements, Sheriff Mitch Alexander confirmed that the shooting was a tragic accident. The investigation concluded that Davis had accidentally shot himself, and there were no suspects or arrests made in connection with his death.
