In the winter of 2001, a tragic event unfolded in the small community of Eden, Idaho, forever marking the date of January 3rd. On that Wednesday, Phillip Charles Anderson, a 23-year-old White/Caucasian male, was working as a Corporal for the Jerome County Sheriff's Department. With two years of service under his belt, he was a dedicated canine officer, often working alongside his partner and fellow Corporal, James Moulson.
Their day took a fateful turn when they were tasked with serving
a narcotics search warrant at a residence. Alongside other members of the Sheriff's Department, Corporals Anderson and Moulson, both wearing bulletproof vests, approached the home of the suspect. When their initial knock and announcement went unanswered, the decision was made to force entry. Corporal Anderson was the first to cross the threshold, where he was immediately confronted by the armed suspect inside.
A sudden exchange of gunfire erupted within the confines of the house. Corporal Anderson was fatally wounded in the initial volley. Corporal Moulson engaged the suspect, and in the ensuing close-quarters gun battle, he too was tragically killed. The suspect, identified as George Timothy Williams, was also shot and killed during the shootout. Later investigations would reveal that the fatal round that struck the suspect was fired by Corporal Anderson. In the end, the suspect in the shooting that claimed the lives of the two officers was killed at the scene, leaving no one to be arrested or prosecuted for their deaths.
