In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 6, 2021, a simmering dispute between a stepfather and stepson erupted into deadly violence in Nampa, Idaho. Michael Lynn Koch, a 56-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot in the driveway of his home on Portner Road. The man responsible was his 76-year-old stepfather, Ronald Carpenter, who remained at the scene and was subsequently taken into custody by the Canyon County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrived around 8:15 a.m.
following reports of a man with a gun and shots fired, discovering Koch's body upon their arrival.
The conflict stemmed from an arrangement where Koch had allowed Carpenter to use a shop on his property to work on his semi-truck. Recently, however, Koch had asked his stepfather to remove his belongings from the property. Carpenter arrived that Saturday morning to retrieve his tools, which he found stacked in the driveway. He told investigators he became angry when he saw that an automotive creeper had been broken and he reacted by throwing the broken item toward Koch's vehicle. This act brought Koch running out of his house in what was described as a rage, escalating the confrontation significantly.
The fatal encounter was captured on a doorbell camera. The video showed Koch grabbing a baseball bat from Carpenter's truck and proceeding to strike the vehicle's windshield and hood. Carpenter stated that his stepson then came toward the driver's side of the truck with the bat held over his shoulder. Believing he was about to be attacked, Carpenter retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. According to Carpenter, Koch saw the gun and taunted him, saying, "shoot me,. " The video recorded Koch raising the bat and stepping toward Carpenter, who then fired a shot, causing Koch to fall to the ground. Five seconds later, as Koch appeared to be pushing himself up from the ground, Carpenter fired a second time.
Ronald Carpenter was arrested and booked into the Canyon County jail on a charge of second-degree murder. The investigation that followed centered on the video evidence and the claim of self-defense. In March 2021, Carpenter was charged with second-degree murder. The case eventually went to trial, and on June 27, 2023, a jury acquitted Ronald Carpenter. After a six-day trial, the jury concluded that he had acted in self-defense during the altercation with his stepson.
