In the small Vermont town of Greensboro, a dispute that began over the sale of alcohol tragically escalated, leading to the death of 27-year-old Robert Chaplin, a Caucasian male. On the evening of October 20, 2021, Chaplin attempted to purchase alcohol at a convenience store in the nearby town of Hardwick. A clerk at the store denied the sale, believing Chaplin to be too intoxicated. This decision led to a confrontation.
Another man present in the store, 48-year-old Darryl Johnson of Greensboro, intervened in the dispute between Chaplin and the store clerk. The specifics of their initial interaction are not detailed, but it concluded with Johnson physically escorting Chaplin out of the establishment. Although police were called to the scene, Chaplin had already departed by the time they arrived. The conflict, however, was far from over.
