In the quiet town of Brattleboro, Vermont, the evening of March 30, 2023, was shattered by the sound of gunfire emanating from a residence on Birge Street. When officers from the Brattleboro Police Department arrived at the apartment shortly before 8 p.m., they discovered the body of 21-year-old Tamico Williams, a Black / African American male from Hartford, Connecticut.
An autopsy would later confirm that Williams had died from gunshot wounds to the torso, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather a targeted incident.
As the Vermont State Police took the lead on the investigation, the case unfolded over the following months. Detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The investigation eventually pointed to a dispute connected to the sale of drugs within the Birge Street apartment. It was determined that the shooting occurred during a physical altercation that escalated to a deadly conclusion.
By August 2023, a suspect was identified in connection with Williams' death. An arrest warrant for second-degree murder was issued for Elias J. Lopez, an 18-year-old also from Hartford, Connecticut. At the time the warrant was issued, Lopez was already incarcerated at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans on an unrelated federal drug distribution charge. He had been arrested just days prior following the execution of a search warrant on Linden Street in Brattleboro. Authorities stated that the fatal encounter between Lopez and Williams stemmed from a dispute over drug sales.
