On September 7, 1909, Policeman Clifford A. Hawley of the Huron Police Department in South Dakota was fatally shot while attempting to intervene in a confrontation between two individuals identified as hobos. As he sought to break up the altercation, one of the men produced a concealed firearm and shot Officer Hawley, resulting in his immediate death.
